About Noah Dewar

PhD from Stanford University, worked with airborne time domain EM methods and machine learning models such as long-short term memory and convolutional neural nets in combination with other geophysical data sources to study subsurface structures, groundwater flow and recharge related problems in the central valley of California with an aim to improve sustainable management practices and groundwater policy. CTO of HighTide intelligence where we aim to empower resilient living in coastal communities.

    Doctoral Researcher
    Stanford University Sep 2016 - Jun 2021
    Stanford, Ca, Us
Groundwater Architecture Project• As part the Stanford led Groundwater Architecture Project (GAP) [mapwater.stanford.edu], managed the acquisition of data for two basin-scale airborne electromagnetic (AEM) surveys in the Californian Central Valley and developed the optimal workflow for the use of AEM data in the construction of groundwater models to inform sustainable management in the Central Valley of California.• Wrote sections in the final GAP report pertaining to my doctoral research and worked as part of a committee to write the final GAP recommendations given to the California Department of Water Resources that will be used to guide the spending of $12 million on AEM projects in California under Proposition 68.• Developed novel methodologies allowing for the estimation of the depth to the water table from AEM data and the transformation of AEM derived subsurface resistivity into sediment type.Indonesian Peat Prize• Performed geophysical modeling demonstrating that the AEM method can map the thickness of tropical peat-lands as part of a joint proposal from Stanford and Duke University submitted to the Indonesian Peat Prize.• Presented the modeling results to a scientific panel and the media in Jakarta and was selected as one of the finalists for the $1 million cash prize.
  • World Resources Institute
    Schneider Fellowship
World Resources Institute Jul 2020 - Sep 2020
    Washington, Dc, Us
Awarded the Summer 2020 Schneider fellowship from the Haas Center for Public Service at Stanford University. • Developed an end-to-end machine learning workflow with Keras/Tensorflow and built the data pipelines required to construct, test, and optimize both recurrent convolutional neural nets and graph convolutional neural nets for the prediction of armed conflict in the global south.• Participated in policy meetings with stakeholders in the international development community and helped communicate technical results to non-experts at the meetings.• Created the processing pipelines necessary to build additional features for the conflict prediction model based on global economic, energy, and food indicators, as well as remotely sensed data sets.• For the specific case of predicting emerging conflict, improved the conflict prediction model’s F2 by 11% through the use of graph convolutional neural nets compared to the previously used random forest-based model.
