Throughout my time spent prusueing my undergraduate degree at Oswego Dr. Amy Bidwell was willing to give me the opportunity to get some experience as a health coach for the past two years. During this time I was able to work on coach interviewing skills/tactics as well as the rationale behind health coaching psychology. I worked in groups of 5-7 college students in a classroom with about 18-25 students total (each semester varied). The goal of the class was to educate incoming freshmen in the first semester and anyone who was interested in the second semester on what their health is and the 8 dimensions to break it up into so they could effective control their life and suceed. Each week the students would start the week by learning about a new topic of their health such as what the 8 dimensions are, what fats are, proteins are, time management skills, financial management skills, etc. Then on Wednesday they would plan their SMART goals (pecific, measurable, attainable, realistic, timely) to actually write out and actively plan a course of action during that week to achieve. This helped a lot of students stay on track during the semester, created a friendlier/structured environment, and helped some students decide what major was for them. On Friday at the end of the week we used class for educating the students on other often overlooked school as well as public resources they can use to be more successful during college. The health coaching itself was amazing because I was able to work with such a diverse population of students challenging me to think outside the box on how to ask the right questions to further their self realization. When I can do that, that is a big step toward implementing healthy behavior changes for an individual.

Carried out a school health promotion program that was geared towards creating an environment that promotes a physically active lifestyle for college students coming in to SUNY Oswego. The goal of the program was to target freshmen students coming into to the college because they have had the least exposure to the often lived sedentary lifestyle common at Oswego as well as the United States of America as people enter adulthood. Through carefully done research a few of my team members and I gathered sufficient evidence from the ACHA (American College Health Association) data retrieved from the school and WHO (World Health Organization) data collected online to determine that there was an all too common trend of sedentary lifestyles and unhealthy BMI readings. This was why the "Fit Freshmen Now, For a Healthy Future" program was created and pursued throughout the semester as an important need to be seen on campus as a starting point. During this time my role was primarily organizing time management schedules for when assignments needed to be completed and decided who did what task. In addition, I was also largely responsible for the data research used and found for the program rationale. The primary areas we looked at improving were physical activity rates in individuals to hopefully correlate into healthier eating behaviors as well as other health behaviors to become closer to reaching other health related goals of theirs. These goals can eventually lead them to having a higher quality of life when balancing the dimensions of wellness in their daily lives. Check the document provided for more information.
