About Noah H.
Materials science fascinates me in the breadth of ideas that fall under it, both fundamental and applied. The potential of high-tech materials enthralls me, and I am interested in the process of bringing these materials from the lab bench to store shelves and every point along the way.In my professional life, I am mainly concerned with the applications of new materials and development of new processes. In my spare time, I design products, lighting and furniture by exploiting the optical, mechanical and chemical properties of everyday building materials.

R&D Project Manager
Developed novel electroplating processes based on customer and regulatory requirements using design-of-experiments (DoE) methodology and accompanying analytical techniques to verify quality and composition (e.g. microhardness, elemental composition) Maintained database of procedures and chemicals to meet and exceed NADCAP compliance Responsible for laboratory maintenance, upkeep and cleanliness Responsible for providing training, technical and quality assurance for other facilities
Phd Candidate
I explore the processing fundamentals of soft materials and liquid feedstocks for extrusion freeform fabrication. Analysis of motion control and high-speed process limitations into a mechanically limited regime. Rheological characterization of liquids applied to modelling of flow behavior and shape retention in quasi-static calculations.
Graduate Research Assistant
Additive manufacturing methods, including 3D printing, have exploded in popularity to become a $4 billion industry. However, these processes are still lacking capabilities for processing high viscosity liquid precursors. The objective of my research was to adapt extrusion freeform fabrication for 3D printing of soft, elastomeric materials. In the process, I developed a custom-built electro-pneumatic dispensing system and successfully interfaced it with an open-source 3D printing platform. I was able to increase extrusion throughput and decrease print times by >100% compared to similar resuslts in literature. 3D printed parts lack standard testing protocols, so I adapted relevant ISO and ASTM for mechanical testing of elastomers in order to characterize the printed parts under uniaxial tension, compression and shear. Traditional thermoplastic 3D printing was also used to build fixtures and parts for the custom 3D printer. To ensure continued operation, detailed SOPs and schematics were drafted for the custom machine.
Research Assistant
Synthesized monodisperse collodial silica nanoparticles, characterized particle size distribution using centrifugal size analysis and electron microscopy. Deposited self-assembled thin films of collodial silica and gold to develop size-exclusive substrate for surface enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS).Designed and fabricated driver/control system for photoinitiated polymerizations from commercial light-emitting diodes and open source electrons. Determined effects of initiator loading on conversion rate.
Research Assistant
As an assistant in the Flannigan Ultrafast Transmission Electron Microscopy (UTEM) Group, I prepared thin film samples of graphene and empirically derived a process for producing high quality samples from CVD-grown substrates. I characterized the quality of these samples by acquiring optical and TEM images, as well as Raman spectra. I developed MATLAB code to color code and overlay regions of interest in the Raman spectra to correlate with features observed in optical and TEM images.
Research Assistant
Utilized time-of-flight mass spectrometry to elucidate the molecular structure of glass samples. Responsibilities included instrument maintenance/calibration, glassmaking, Raman spectroscopy and spectral analysis/deconvolution.
