Kinouété provides social and psychological support to the carceral population in Mauritius. Their team of trained and experienced social workers and psychologists undergo regular visits to the majority of the prisons in Mauritius, they conduct various activities within the prison setting and offer counselling services to detainees. Their support is not limited to the prison setting as they also offer their services to the families of detainees and do regular follow-ups with past detainees to minimize risks of re-offending. I was lucky to be trusted with many responsibilities through the course of my internship. I participated in the planning and was present during their ‘Bootcamp’, which is a residential seminar organised for the children of detainees which are current clients at Kinouété.I was regularly involved in the planning of their different programs backed up by psychological evidence, which was the perfect opportunity to make use of the knowledge I acquired in my studies. I went through an internship at the NGO Future Hope Mauritius. They provide academic, social and financial support to underprivileged kids around four areas, mainly Sainte Croix, Roche Bois, Résidence La Cure and Petite Rivière.• Future Hope provides support to their beneficiaries by running an alternative school at their main centre in Sainte Croix for kids who previously underperformed in ‘normal schools’ or were not able to attend school consistently due to financial reasons or personal difficulties. The remaining centres in Roche Bois, Résidence La Cure and Petite Rivière mainly provide academic support to school students who reside nearby after school hours. • I was able to provide a great deal of academic support to the students given my knowledge as a university student. I was trusted to run classes on my own as a volunteer teacher and developed teaching skills, as well as communication. My responsibilities as an intern were not limited as help was always welcome so I developed administrative skills while helping around in the school office. I also helped around in the numerous workshops and events that are organised for the children, sometimes in collaboration with other NGOs.• Achievements: I broadened my career prospects in the psychology field by networking extensively with other NGOs and even government bodies. I learned how to deal with children coming from different socioeconomic backgrounds whose development may not be similar to the majority.
