When I was a baby, my mom played "Baby Galileo: Discovering the Sky" on the TV; I have been entranced by the cosmos ever since. Today, I am studying astrophysics in Houston, the heart of NASA, as an undergraduate at Rice University to realize my lifelong passion. Along the way, I have found meaning and curiosity in other areas, such as world history and politics, and as a Korean American, I resonated most with the hardships others and I faced from racism and other social ills. After studying abroad for a year in 2018, my worldview and understanding of human society drastically expanded, so I am also deeply engaged in social justice and Asian Studies. At Rice, much of my work is a spiritual continuation of the projects and activities I did in high school. I am taking courses such as thermal physics, optics, acoustics, and honors linear algebra, and I am a research assistant in the Rice Heavy Ion Group, an active member of the Society of Physics and Astronomy, the Rice Undergraduate Geosciences Society, and soon, Rice Eclipse, the premier rocketry team on campus. My mathematics knowledge includes multivariable calculus and ODE, combinatorics, and statistics taught in IB Math HL, and I have a respectable amount of astronomy knowledge due to a lifetime of learning. I am a responsible worker with excellent organizational and time management habits, a great colleague in group settings, professional and cross-cultural communication skills, and most importantly, intellectual curiosity!Even when free, if I am not playing or watching basketball, consuming Korean entertainment, trying new things, or spending time with friends and family, I am passively broadening my knowledge by watching documentaries or reading articles from science journalism. I am currently looking for further opportunities in research, internships, etc., so please reach out if my skills and interests align with your mission! Particle Physics Research AssistantRice University School Of Natural Sciences Oct 2023 - PresentHouston, Texas, United StatesI am currently conducting research with particle detectors that we built in order to gain a better understanding of cosmic showers and the variables that affect them (location, time, weather) in the T.W Bonner Nuclear Lab, focusing on muon detection. I perform my tasks in a group of three under the guidance of Dr. Frank Geurts. Our goal is to create a muon map over the greater Houston area and perform a muon lifetime study implementing more detectors and involving high schoolers passionate in scientific research—many high schools have unutilized particle detectors that are simply collecting dust as of today. -
