Apex Tents was my entrepreneurial classroom for nearly 20 years. We supplied tents, temporary structures and infrastructure to the event industry. We built a business that I was incredibly proud to lead and successfully exited in 2014 when acquired by a competitor. My entrepreneurial journey provided an incredible education in business and life; some of my lessons are as follows.I learned about the value of service; do what you say you will, provide more than your client expects, and trust is the most important elements of good relationships - with clients, supplier and staff. So much of great service is in the details that your clients don’t notice when done right.I learned about process and systems and their importance in operating a business where the ability to do a great job, over and over again, relies on consistency and management.I learned about marketing and brand; the ability to communicate what you do, why you do it and how it solves a challenge for others. Tell your story in your actions, your appearance and your products and the market will respond in kind.I learned about financial management and the critical need to understand the numbers; revenue vs cash flow, expense vs investment, risk vs reward.I learned about people; everyone wants to be heard and respected, to be valued and to create value, to be given the opportunity to learn and grow as part of a community.I learned that I really love business and being an entrepreneur. To launch, build, operate and sell our business was an adventure and a gift; of hard work, challenges overcome and successes celebrated on which I reflect with extreme gratitude.
