Industrial Microbes is building a fermentation technology to convert methane and carbon dioxide into valuable, versatile building-block chemicals used in a wide range of applications.

I studied the yeast mating pathway using a synthetic biology approach in an effort towards understanding the dynamics of a signaling pathway in vivo. By engineering novel feedback loops into this "cellular circuit" and controlling key parameters (such as timing, strength of expression, and binding affinity), I am developing a quantitative model to understand both the mechanism and evolution of cellular information processing. Currently, I am rebuilding this system to explore variability between cells in a clonal population using fluorescence microscopy and custom image analysis software. Some of this work was published in the journal Science in March 2008.

I designed, fabricated, integrated, and tested a novel, patentable semiconductor optoelectronic device for optical interconnect systems. This device was optimized to provide high contrast ratio, low operating voltage, and excellent misalignment tolerance for easy integration with future electronic and optical systems. Published in IEEE Journal of Selected Topics in Quantum Electronics in 2005.
