This TA position is for ESM 120: Global Environmental Interactions, an upper-division elective course in the Department of Land, Air, and Water Resources taught by Prof. Rebecca Hernandez. This is an earth science course with heavy focus on multimedia scientific communication; interaction of chemistry, biology, ecology, and physics; and core literacies in climate science. Duties for this role are of a typical TA position: grading, facilitating discussion, working in a team with other TAs and the instructor, and creating a welcoming environment for students to thrive and explore their interests.

While pursuing my Ph.D., I'm researching under Prof. Rebecca Hernandez through the Wild Energy Initiative and the Global Ecology and Sustainability Lab. My work focuses on the intersection of soil carbon sequestration and solar arrays -- specifically, how to stack these functions together as effectively as possible. This is part of a restorative solar grant funded by the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI). I look forward to being a part of the Wild Energy/GESL teams, and I can't wait to make a meaningful impact on how we think about renewable energy and land use as a whole.

As a Co-Coordinator for the Waterway Stewardship Internship, my main purposes were to plan internship activities, set up and take down tools, equipment, and plants, interview for potential new interns, manage plant records for the team, promote academic and mental well-being, create a culture of friendship and trust, and be a valuable student resource for the UC Davis Arboretum and Public Garden. Technical skills from this position include operating heavy machinery, use of IrisBG plant record software, basic MS office skills, and field techniques for planting native and non-native riparian plants. Interpersonal skills include those from being an Intern, as well as increased leadership and public speaking, careful communication during interviews, managing a productive work environment on Slack, and time management of complex internship days.

As an intern under the UC Davis Arboretum and Public Garden's Learning by Leading framework, I worked in a team of ten to twelve interns to improve the grounds near the Waterway. Specific examples of projects include installing irrigation for wild grapes, designing and building a floating island for plants and animals with upcycled materials, planting native California riparian species across the length of the Waterway, and conducting water quality tests and analyzing data. The internship has a focus on leadership, and throughout my time as a part of the team, I've built upon communication and teamwork skills while recognizing my own positive leadership traits.

See Roof Helper for more basic information.As a Head Roof Helper for the 2021-2022 academic year, I had additional responsibilities to ensure the class was running smoothly. These included organizing workflows for the nighttime laboratory sessions, being a liaison between the TA and Roof Helpers, as well as ultimately guiding the TA and professor to improve future course offerings. As all of the Roof Helpers were new in Fall 2021, I had an extra responsibility of demonstrating teaching techniques to promote smooth and productive class time, as well as contribute to the longevity of the course. Furthermore, in Winter 2022, I completely overhauled the laboratory manual to make it easier and clearer to use and edit, as well as align with current curriculum. My previous edit was mostly for transcribing into modern Microsoft Word, but this one consisted of an entirely rewritten finished product. Some notable changes were writing pertinent and digestible background sections, nuanced procedure sections, useful and interesting questions, spacious and user-friendly data sheets, and a detailed glossary and appendix.

Working with the Environmental SARS-CoV-2 Analysis Team headed by Drs. Heather Bischel and Karen Shapiro, I mainly focused on data entry and analysis during the school year. This included keeping the collective wastewater data sheet up to date, being familiar with MATLAB-driven data automation, and pointing out any discrepancies or concerns to other members of the team. In Summer 2021, I worked in the lab in person, full-time, processing wastewater samples through the RT-qPCR pipeline from on and off campus. Additionally, I aided in solids settling for samples from UC Davis and the City of Woodland. Furthermore, I detailed a statistical report summarizing the past communication strategy for wastewater positives in the dorms, ultimately aiding decisions to tailor the warning system for the 2021-2022 academic year.

As the Student Director of the UC Davis Marching Band during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, I was mainly responsible for arranging music to be recorded remotely, preparing for in-person activities, and generally keeping the morale of the band as high as I could. Working alongside two Campus Rec career staff members and six other student officers, I learned about teamwork, compassion, and compromise. In a normal year, I would have had the responsibility of conducting rehearsals and gigs, so I worked hard to learn the band's folder, style, and hone my conducting and communication skills.

As a roof helper for the UC Davis astronomy department, I worked with a team of about fifteen other roof helpers to ensure nighttime labs for AST 010L and AST 025 run smoothly. The larger team split into smaller groups that tended to each of three to four lab nights every week. A typical night included setting up and taking down telescopes, giving a "star talk" explaining what's important to know for the lab that night, and most importantly, actively teaching and assisting the class of about thirty students, while maintaining a relaxed yet productive learning environment. Because TA positions changed quarter to quarter, it was my job as a Roof Helper to understand how to do every lab, explain any nuance not mentioned in the lab manual to the TA, and learn any other valuable information needed to run the labs smoother in the future.During Winter 2020, while the class wasn't in session, I converted the decades-old lab manuals into modern Microsoft Word. This included grammar and clarity checks, updating information to what was current, reducing the need for quarterly updates, inserting and rearranging labs, and clarifying computer software labs. My initial revision took until Fall 2020, but I revised the main manual heavily in Winter 2022 as a Head Roof Helper.

As the Center Director was out of office most days, I had increased managerial responsibilities such as workflow delegation, tailoring curriculum, and progress reporting to parents.

As an Instructor working for Mathnasium of Mission Gorge, San Diego, I learned many things over my time. A typical day included actively engaging and individually teaching up to four K-12 math students at a time, taking part in giving feedback to Lead Instructors to ensure the students' learning plans are working for them, and general center upkeep when there weren't many students in. Teaching was rooted in deep understanding of concepts, and there was a strong emphasis on learning the fundamentals of mathematical reasoning before learning newer concepts. For example, if a student struggled with long division, it was my job as an Instructor to recognize that the student may be struggling with the underlying multiplication instead, and update their learning plan accordingly.Although Instructors were technically responsible for only teaching four kids at a time, it was our duty to keep an open eye and tend to any overwhelmed instructor or unhelped student. The center kept a very open floor plan, and us Instructors were responsible for being as mobile as possible. As a high school student working amongst college-age and college graduate coworkers, I brought necessary insight about how the teachers at my local high school were, how they taught, and current knowledge about SAT, ACT, and AP exams. Additionally, if I was struggling with teaching a concept to a student, it was encouraged that I seek assistance from my surrounding instructors. Overall, working at Mathnasium showed me patience, time management, how to work with kids, and an appreciation for learning impossible to come by anywhere else.
