I am a skilled and experienced architect. My work includes private client residential projects as well as works for niche cultural organisations such as a new building for a Buddhist monastery, and to listed buildings associated with an educational trust. Much of my experience has involved settings of special sensitivity, eg. Listed Buildings, Conservation Areas, South Downs National Park. Previous to my own practice, my experience encompasses a range of works including office buildings, a bank HQ, and designing new infrastructure works associated with waste water treatment in SW England, such as new pumping stations which were often inserted into sensitive settings in coastal towns. I have also worked on many varied new build, upgrade and alteration works associated with public sector buildings, eg. Customs and Excise, HM Coastguard, and MoD.Running my own practice means I am adept at skills needed for every stage of projects from Feasibility Studies through to Contract Administration. Although I can describe myself as an all-rounder, I have particular strengths in respect of building technology and the appreciation of the making process together with the limitations imposed by site constraints. Adopting the position of design team manager and leader is my natural habitat, perhaps because this reflects my broad skillset and interests across the spectrum of what goes into a project. Good communication and interpersonal skills are also fundamental and I seek to encourage the best out of other team members as well as client parties. I am up to date with current trends and legislation requirements, in particular in the field of sustainability and environmental design, where my training as a Passivhaus Designer has provided me with a strong technical base. Recent experience includes responsibility for a new build Certified Passivhaus , through from initial design to completion. I am keen to build on this experience and engage with more including Retrofit (Enerphit) projects and utilisation of the AECB Building Standard. These approaches represent the best knowledge and methodology that we have if we are to make the meaningful improvement of our built environment that’s needed to address climate change. Comfortable, healthy living conditions and low running costs are integral benefits. Buildings typically last a very long time and its critical that we engage with making them fit for the 21st century. Insulation often sounds dull and difficult, lets see if we can find inventive answers that use creativity to make our world better for all of us.
