About Noeska Smit

I develop visualizationtechniques to provide insight into complex medical data in order to solve real-world medicalproblems in both research and clinical contexts. My current interests are oriented towardsimproving medical diagnosis, education, and surgical treatment planning, with an emphasis onenabling interactive visual analysis of spatial data.I worked and studied as a radiographer for 3 years, after that I started studying Computer Science (Media & Knowledge Engineering). I obtained my PhD in medical visualization at the Delft University of Technology (the Netherlands). Currently I am working as a professor at the University of Bergen (Norway). Through my experiences as a radiographer I am able to speak both the medical and technical language.

Phd Student
In my PhD project, I developed a new surgical planning system as well as an integrated histology-based, 3D atlas model of the human pelvis, the Virtual Surgical Pelvis (VSP). The VSP was used to improve anatomical education by providing detailed information in linked 2D and 3D views. Furthermore, I developed an application that allows for pre-operative planning of the Total Mesorectal Excision surgical procedure, by registering the atlas to a patient-specific scan and visualizing the results using interactive 3D visualization methods. This project was funded by the STW and featured a close interdisciplinary collaboration between the TU Delft’s Computer Graphics and Visualization group and the Leiden University Medical Center’s departments of Anatomy and Surgery.
