Lead researcher in a multi-semester project investigating the dependence of hair bundle mechanoreception on discharge of nematocysts during the feeding response of the starlet sea anemone, Nematostella vectensis. (i). Conducted feeding experiments with microscopic developing anemones before and after disrupting hair bundles using ATP. Collected data on number of prey consumed, paralyzed but not consumed, and swimming. (ii). Conducted a morphological study of hair bundles on tentacles of developing anemones using phase-contrast microscopy, a digital camera, and computer software.(iii). Collected fertilized eggs from adult cultures of anemones and maintained cultures of developing embryos.Co-authored research presentation, “Feeding Experiments with Nematostella vectensis” at the 7th Annual Undergraduate Research Conference hosted by UL Lafayette Honors Program, Nov 21-22, 2014.
