Profile bio

About Nolan Miller

As a Graduate Research Assistant at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, I specialize in areas like solvent transport, soft elastomers, and bio-inspired adhesion, honing skills in image analysis with ImageJ and MATLAB, mechanical analysis, and instrument design. Recently, I presented my research on a bio-inspired, high-acceleration snapping beam at the 2024 Deformation, Yield, and Fracture of Polymers conference in the Netherlands, emphasizing the practical applications of understanding polymer physics in fields such as material science and sustainable engineering. I thrive in collaborative environments where diverse ideas flow freely, driving innovation and creativity. I'm passionate about developing sustainable materials that can positively impact our environment. Outside of my research, I enjoy gardening and exploring the intricate art of origami, which reflects my appreciation for creativity and patience. Looking ahead, I aspire to continue my academic journey as a postdoctoral researcher and ultimately become a professor at an R1 research university.

Nolan Miller work experience

A career timeline built from the work history available for this profile.

Summer Undergraduate Research Fellow (Surf)

West Lafayette, Indiana, United States

I joined the Advanced Computational Materials and Experimental Evaluation Lab (ACMEE) led by Dr. Michael Sangid within Purdue University's School of Aeronautics and Astronautics. In this experience, I learned how to use Avizo and synthesized these skills with my knowledge of ImageJ and MATLAB to characterize crack morphology, crack propagation, and surface roughness of Titanium and Nickel-Chromium superalloys. My research from this summer was published in the Journal of Minerals, Metals & Materials (DOI: 10.1007/s11837-019-03910-0)

Jun 2019 - Aug 2020

Undergraduate Research Assistant - Davis Research Group

West Lafayette, Indiana, United States

My research focused on advancing bioderived materials, specifically Cellulose Nanocrystals (CNCs), for industrial applications. By developing a novel experimental method to assess the mechanical properties of CNC thin films, we explored how particle orientation affects film performance. Through spin-coating CNCs onto silicone elastomers and applying lateral compression, we were able to analyze how the modulus varies with particle alignment. The findings, supported by coarse-grained modeling, revealed higher modulus values where CNCs align with the compression direction. This work provides a foundation for improving green materials for diverse applications such as sensors, batteries, and coatings. My undergraduate research advisor, Chelsea Davis, and I have since published this work in ACS Applied Polymer Materials (DOI: 10.1021/acsapm.1c01514)
