Most of my adult life I was with the Wisconsin Department of Corrections, working in various capacities in various locations. Starting as a Parole Agent in Milwaukee in 1968, I retired as a Corrections Field Supervisor in Portage County in 2003. Stops in between included a "sabbatical" with the US Army in SE Asia, Probation Agent roles in Rock, Dunn and Wood Counties, supervising prison drug treatment programs and serving as an ad hoc Parole Commissioner. Turning down two "dream retirement jobs," warehouse parts puller and operating a mobile drug screen lab, I chose to become a crisis counselor at the Family Crisis Center, Stevens Point, where I discovered a latent passion for supporting victims of intimate partner violence. Not necessarily intending to work with offenders again, except perhaps in prison or jail ministry, I was pressed into service when FCC's Domestic Abuse Alternatives Program was in need of a co-facilitator. While bringing a fair amount of treatment group experience with me, I learned so much as "side-show Bob" to some very impressive female co-facilitators. Formal training in Duluth and at Wisconsin Batterers Treatment Providers Association's annual training meetings have not only helped me hone my skills but have convinced me that batterer intervention has the potential to increase safety for participants' partners, past, present and future and their children.
