Data/Projects Reporter

Greater New York City Area

I was a reporter on The News' data and projects team, where I worked with on major investigations, helped beat reporters integrate data into their daily and Sunday stories, and built the newsroom's data library. Investigations included: - An examination of 179 on-duty NYPD officer-involved homicides that found that only three cases were prosecuted, resulting in just one conviction. The story placed second for “Depth Reporting” in the NY State AP Awards and was part of The News' first place “Continuing Coverage” entry for coverage of Garner's death. - Examined subsequent efforts to reform how such investigations and prosecutions are conducted. - A five-day series that highlighted and exposed inequity in city schools, which placed first in the New York State AP's 2016 'Depth Reporting' reporting category. - Geospatially analyzed (QGIS/PostGres) NYPD crash data to see what impact Mayor de Blasio’s Vision Zero policies had on the streets where they were first rolled out. - Used Taxi and Limousine Commission data to examine how much Uber and other ride sharing businesses are costing the city's yellow cabs.

Oct 2014 - Sep 2015

Staff Writer

San Antonio, Texas Area

I covered various aspects of state and local government for more than three years as a reporter at the San Antonio Express-News. While there I wrote about the census and demographics, the state's ongoing (and seemingly never-ending) redistricting and Voter ID litigation; covered county government, San Antonio's two massive city-owned electric and water utilities and, finally, state government and politics -- with a focus on enterprise stories. I also assisted the newsroom on data-driven projects and investigations, and helped develop interactives for the web. I left the Express-News to take a position on the New York Daily News' projects team. While at the Express-News:- Introduced data reporting and interactive tools like PANDA and ProPublica's TimelineSetter to the newsroom. - Led the effort to get more of the E-N's newsroom on DocumentCloud. - Regularly used SQL, Excel, Fusion Tables, OpenRefine and DocumentCloud. - Helped launch 'Perry Presidential,' Hearst's blog covering the Rick Perry's 2012 bid for the White House. In addition to my reporting duties, I served as the blog's first producer.

Intern And Freelancer

Austin Bureau

From January to May, I was an intern for the Houston Chronicle and San Antonio Express-News in their shared Austin bureau. I was hired by the Express-News in May, starting in July. The Houston Chronicle kept me on as a freelancer through June to cover the first and only special session of the 82nd Legislature. While at the bureau: - I set up the bureau's Facebook, Twitter and Tumblr pages. - Used social media tools like Storify to help cover floor debates at the Capitol and to break down and explain complicated issues. - Launched recurring blog series called 'Explainer,' which sought to add more detail and policy context to political debates. - Created and wrote 'The First Word,' the bureau's morning political newsletter. - Covered the 82nd Legislative session and wrote about 'guns on campus,' TWIA overhaul, transportation and social issues.
