Profile bio

About Nolan Ung Ph.D.

I'm Ph.D level scientist and a passionate problem solver at my core. I have shown that I can learn quickly and acquire the skills necessary to solve the problem or complete the project at hand. My diverse skill set makes me useful in multiple contexts, at the computer or at the bench. I have 6+ years of research experience in cell and molecular biology, designing experiments, performing computational analysis and making biological conclusions independently and as a part of a collaboration. I am a trained cell and molecular biologist with experience molecular genetics, steady state and malignant developmental hematology and immunology and single cell analysis. I have spearheaded efforts to understand the single cell nature of microRNA function in immune responses and how abnormal gene expression leads to hematological malignancies. Reaching this goal has involved primary cell isolation and culture, work with murine and human cell lines, qPCR, Western Blot, molecular cloning, retroviral transduction, flow cytometry and fluorescence microscopy in an effort to analyze the effect of miRNAs in B cell activation and B cell development and gene regulation. When I'm not at the bench, I can create image analysis tools using Matlab and translate them into user friendly Graphical User Interfaces (GUI's). I developed an image analysis tool that identified and quantified aberrant cellular organelles and using machine learning, classified phenotypes to better pursue relevant drug targets using state of the art image analysis and image processing techniques. In addition, I have used R, a language for statistical computing, to analyze drop-seq data, a cutting edge RNAseq methodology, identifying novel miRNA targets and characterizing single cell changes in the gene expression landscape.

Listed skills include Confocal Microscopy, Fluorescence Microscopy, Molecular Biology, Microscopy, and 41 others.

Graduate Student

Riverside Ca

-As A graduate student in the lab of Dr. Natasha Raikhel, I study endomembrane trafficking in the model system Arabidopsis thaliana.- I am trying to understand the cellular connection between endomembrane trafficking an abiotic stress. -I am pursuing this by using a combination of classical genetics, chemical genetics, engineering, image analysis, and molecular biology. - My pursuits in the Raikhel lab have resulted in a paper on chemical biology and a poster at the 2011 ASPB Plant Biology conference as well as a presentation at the 2012 Midwest Plant cell biology conference.

Jun 2010 - Apr 2015

Undergraduate Researcher

Riverside Ca

- I completed an undergraduate research project in Dr. Harley Smith's lab where I studied meristem the molecular mechanisms of maintenance and the vegetative to floral transition. - To complete this project I used techniques such as in situ hybridization to visualize the expression domains of meristem identity genes and classical genetics techniques to determine the role of two transcription factors in the vegetative to reproductive transition. - My work resulted in three papers, two of which I was first author of. My Work in the Smith lab also earned the Center for Plant cell Biology's Neil Campbell outstanding undergraduate researcher award.
