SA’s overarching National Development Plan (NDP) 2030 advocates for increased investment in an energy sector that is both economically inclusive and environmentally sustainable. The NDP identifies, as a priority, the production of sufficient energy to ensure availability, accessibility and affordability while reducing the carbon intensity of the economy. Though there are efforts to transition the country to net zero, the low carbon energy (LCE) economy is uncompetitive due to high production costs vs. convectional fossil fuel. This challenge impact the market's willingness to adopt, especially in SA where mechanisms to unlock barriers are still under development.
