Lecturer: Peace, War And Defense
CurrentThe war and ongoing conflicts in Iraq have dramatically impacted international relations in the 21st century. This course will focus on developments in Iraq since 1980, with a survey of the Iran-Iraq War, the 1990-91 Gulf War, and then, finally, the 2003 invasion, regime change, and subsequent civil war that led to the rise of the Islamic State. Through a critical treatment of these epochs, students will gain an in-depth knowledge of the political, economic, and ideological factors that led to the eruption of the October Revolution in 2019. It would not be possible to tackle this seminal moment without first reflecting on Iraq’s diverse history and culture and the struggle the Iraqi people have endured during the age of globalization. In addition to a rich array of primary and secondary sources, the class will host a number of speakers with first-hand experience in the region, such as students and scholars who lived and studied under ISIS and the regime of Saddam Hussein.
