Norbert received his diploma degree in physics from the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology in 1983. After his public civilian service he started his PhD thesis in applied physics at the KIT. He was awarded with the PhD degree in 1990 by the KIT. After two-years in industry, where he was developing metrology systems, Norbert was the founding managing director of the Institute of Applied Research of the Karlsruhe University of Applied Sciences (UAS-KA) from 1993 to 1997, promoting and conducting projects in data analysis and computer vision via statistical models and Artificial Neural Networks. He then joined the Fraunhofer research society, where he was head of the department for Recognition and Diagnostic Systems with 20 scientific staff focused on image and signal analysis projects for the German government and major industries like EADS, Airbus, Bosch and more. Norbert is teaching computer vision at the KIT since 1998. In the year 2000 Norbert was appointed full professor at the UAS-KA where he is heading the Intelligent Systems Research Group, which is partner in major research consortia performing industry-related projects, co-funded by the European Commission. The group develops machine learning and optimization methods to enable autonomous and cooperative behavior of production devices. Norbert was also supervisor of the graduate school on Process Chains in Production at the KIT from 2008 - 2017, funded by the German Research Foundation. In 2000 Norbert co-founded Vitracom AG, developing and deploying video-based shopper analysis, and exploiting the data via BI. He was chairman of the Vitracom AG board for four years. Norbert co-founded Inferics GmbH, dedicated to develop and deploy edge-AI to understand video and 3D data.Norbert is also inventor of some 20 patents and author of some 40 scientific publications. He is promoting the value chain of science, technology and economic exploitation in the field of machine intelligence in all aspects.
