With my PhD research, I am investigating risk factors, spatiotemporal patterns, innovative molecular diagnostics, and the immunology of visceral leishmaniasis in Kenya. For this project, I designed, implemented and coordinated a field study in West Pokot County.

As a molecular biologist at the Research Unit of Experimental Parasitology, I worked on the development of simplified molecular diagnostic tests for parasitic diseases, like malaria and leishmaniasis. I was responsible for test optimisation and evaluation in the lab, the organisation and teaching of molecular biology training courses for African research.

With this Master thesis internship at the Unit of Malariology, I worked on the validation of a next generation sequencing tool for molecular surveillance of Plasmodium falciparum in Peru. Under supervision of Dr. Anna Rosanas-Urgell and Dr. Eline Kattenberg, I successfully developed this tool, which can be used to monitor drug resistance and population.

As part of my Master thesis internship at the ITM in Antwerp, I worked at the Department of Malaria and Molecular Epidemiology for 3 months, under supervision of Dr. Dionicia Gamboa. Here, I set up a next generation sequencing (NGS) assay for the detection of drug resistance markers in Plasmodium falciparum. Additionally, I extracted DNA from dried blood.

Gainesville, Florida, Verenigde Staten

During this research internship at the Department of Food Science and Human Nutrition, I studied the role of the divalent iron transporter ZIP8 in renal iron handling during iron overload conditions. I used renal tissue from a mouse model for iron staining, immunohistochemistry, RT-qPCR and Western blot. I was under the supervision of Dr. Mitchell Knutson.

At the Translational Metabolic Laboratory, I prepared for my Bachelor research internship in Gainesville, under supervision of Dr. Dorine Swinkels and Dr. Rachel van Swelm.
