About Norma Rae Escandon
I am a graduate from UTEP with a Bachelor of Multidisciplinary Studies & a Minor in Museum Studies. Before I began my academic career, I began work as a cashier at Lowe’s Home Improvement, which quickly turned into an accounting position. My two years at Lowe’s gave me the skills & confidence to pursue a more challenging endeavor. I applied at Cinemark for Administration Manager where I oversaw accounting obligations, payroll, scheduling & yearly evaluations. It was around this time I realized I needed to fulfill a void in my life. That’s when I decided to pursue my college education. During my academic years at UTEP, I interned at the EP Museum of Art under Michael Tovar & obtained the privilege of becoming a docent there, as well. It was all thanks to the help of Kate Bonansinga, the former Director of the Rubin Center, that allowed me to gain much insight into the daily functions of running a museum successfully. While I attended school, I maintained a cashier position at Sam’s Club, only to later be promoted to oversee the accounting operations. Towards the end of my career at Sam’s, I required a job that was closer to school, which is when I began serving tables at the Rib Hut & quickly moved up to Front of House Manager. I later received a job offer from Whole Foods Market in Austin, TX. where I acquired customer service skills from a culture that will go above and beyond for their guests. At Whole Foods, I aided in Guest Services & assisted in their marketing department where I hosted cooking segments on Good Day Austin & at off site events, e.g., museums & festivals. Upon my return to El Paso, the Rib Hut opened a new location where I took on the role of FOH Manager again. While my time at Rib Hut was educating, the long hours took a toll on family life. My girls were young & I was missing out on important milestones. I took it upon myself to get a career with family friendly hours. So I began to pursue my teaching degree. Starting off as a substitute teacher for Special Needs, I found myself permanently placed in an elementary class environment that specialized in students with autism. I found that job fulfilling & rewarding. Once the pandemic hit, I felt immense stress. It was then that I made the difficult decision to resign. Now that my daughters are older, I decided to go into business for myself.In July of 2021, my husband & I opened Sunland Park BBQ Co. The success of our food truck lead us to our new endeavor-Maurice's Backyard Boozery. El Paso's first food truck dog park & bar.
