Participated in Daily Team meetings that reviewed incidents, project roadmaps and status, along with status of changes, including status of access to mainframes. It was a good learning experience for myself, and this was a client supporting multiple data centres as result of corporate takeovers in the past. The contraxt only lasted 2 months, just long enough to finally overcome various issues that I had encountered with access. While waiting for my access, I spent time doing research on BMC File-Aid software, and developed a plan to do the upgrade to a more current level that supports zOS 2.5 and zOS 3.1 releases. The actual implementation work was about to start when the contract was cancelled by the client, due to some financial issues.

Then, worked with the project manager, providing technical leadership, as well as analyzing the data captured and consolidated into a comparative Excel report on each of the 5 workload swap exercises, that were performed, along with recommendations.RFS Solutioning Meetings With the Client: Attended many such meetings to review client application requests, to understand the design, in order to provide infrastructure related solutions, with a view to maximizing resiliency of all mainframe applications at the client, by ensuring that all aspects of the request are covered by the resulting proposal to the client.

Responsibilities also include certifying (and signoff) on new releases of various software products (IMS, CICS, DB2, etc) and operating systems throughout every stage of deployment starting from test systems through to production. This includes primary support for Workload Manager (WLM) and Monitoring tools, through usage of products such as ISPF dialogs, CLISTs, JCL, SAS (including SAS/PC), REXXs, Assembler, SMF, RMF, MICS, MXG, SYSLOGs, as well as Candle Omegamon and CMW products. With Candle now being part of IBM Tivoli, resurrected my Unix skills to install and support Tivoli

Responsible for performance management. Developed PCMIS application, based on C++, MICS, SAS, ISPF, CLIST, REXX code, and Assembler to produce emailable automated reports on performance. Brought in ThruPut Manager to address issues of contending batch jobs, impacting overall turnaround. Developed benchmarking job streams used to exercise DASD and tape devices, as well as CPU utilizations, used to certify/signoff new releases of operating systems. Also, supported Candle Omegamon products for both real time mainframe monitoring, as well as PC based CMW monitoring of both mainframe and midrange MQ servers. Key participant in the introduction of SYSPLEX and WLM Goal mode. Provided support of STROBE and subsequent INTUNE products to assist Application Development with their performance tuning opportunities.

Supported 4 distinct sites. Participated in the migration of the development site from downtown Toronto to new Guelph location. Brought in ThruPut Manager to address turnaround issues in the development site. Used BEST/1 Modelling tools to gauge potential effects of upgrades. Also, used/supported STROBE to assist application performance issues. Omegamon was also used for mainframe performance tracking.

Main role was in storage management. Brought in DFHSM to handle day to day DASD management, as well as develop Disaster Recovery process, to cover various scenarios, ranging from individual loss of data to complete loss of site, in which case a hot standby site was utilized to test recovery. Also supported graphic products used by engineering to design aircraft engines, as well as IMS used by business applications. Brought in new Omegamon products to assist Operations in monitoring mainframe environment.

Montreal, Quebec, Canada

Started as an application programmer trainee writing PL/I code on OS/360-50 MFT using 2314 DASD. Evolved through the years to Jr, Intermediate, then to Sr Programmer, finally to System Programmer, supporting VS2 to MVS/XA with JES2 on 2 4381 mainframes, with shared 3350 DASD. Wrote PL/I code supporting the first Centralized Billing system. Supported various applications such as TCAM, then VTAM2, then to ACF/VTAM, using SMP/E to apply system maintenance, created in-house PTFs, TSO, RJE, ISPF, VSAPL, PLI, FORTRAN, COBOL. Developed inhouse benchmarking tools, as well as tools to migrate datasets from 2314 DASD to 3350 DASD, optimizing their block sizes in the process. Developed in house External Writer assembler code to handle reports and backup input data to/from remote workstations. Represented company in Software Montreal Users group to dialog with IBM on mainframe software support issues.
