I joined FG Wilsons after leaving university in 2006 as an electrical engineer. I gained experience in the electrical design of diesel generators including technical drawings (AutoCAD & Pro-Engineer) and the testing of new designs as well as the various country regulations that governed design where the product was sold. Along with designing electrical systems, I also had to support the assembly lines when issues arose.When I became a senior engineer I had the additional responsibilities of approving technical drawings, being a technical support when working with suppliers of electrical components and speaking with dealers about any concerns or design introductions they'd wish to see.Having gained experience in the power generation sector I decided to take the next step and go into the power system industry by joining SONI in 2012. My main duties were to support real time operations, testing of both conventional and renewable generators for Grid Code compliance as well as the introduction of Grid Code changes. I would advise generators on their Grid Code requirements as well as taking part in consultations when Grid Code changes were taking place. Other duties included ensuring that the technical data going to the Single Electricity Market was accurate from which I obtained a lot of knowledge about the electricity market in Ireland.In 2016 I joined real time operations in the electricity control room for the transmission system as an assistant grid control engineer which is my current role. I schedule and control generation, monitoring frequency and voltage, to maintain system security (keep the lights on) but also in an economic and efficient manner. My duties give me an in-depth understanding power system operation, power system studies and ISEM (electricity market).
