I specialise in proofreading and copy editing, covering a wide range of subjects, both fiction and non-fiction, as well as technical publications. My love affair with reading started at a young age. As a wee boy I was drawn to my local library in Glasgow. This was a warm and quiet refuge, away from the overcrowded and chaotic tenements where I grew up. Books became my escape during the cold, dark, dreich Scottish winters. I became an avid reader, an autodidact, spending many hours engrossed in books. I devoured everything from Enid Blyton to Robbie Burns and Ludwig Wittgenstein. I served an apprenticeship as a helicopter technician in the British Army. Subsequently, I gained extensive knowledge and competence in a range of industries and engineering disciplines, worldwide. As time went by, I discovered I had innate talents as a proofreader and copy editor, along with unrelentingly high standards! According to Myers Briggs I am an INTJ personality type. INTJs have an enquiring, critical mind and a sharp eye for detail. This means I can’t help noticing the elusive errors that most other people miss. These traits tie in perfectly with the skills required for proofreading and copy editing. Thus, over the years, I took on this role in the course of various jobs. My skills as a proofreader and copy editor have proven especially useful when working with technical publications and complex standard operating procedures (SOPs) across a range of industries. I am constantly amazed at the proliferation of badly written technical manuals, codes of practice, and health and safety guidelines that are plagued by inconsistent terminology and confusing language. I excel at improving the clarity of written content where needed, crafting material that is clear, user-friendly and unambiguous. If you have a book, document, website, technical manual or other material that needs to be 100% accurate, please contact me. Email me at norman@manofletters.co.nz

Proofreader And Copy Editor-In-ChiefMan Of Letters Jan 2018 - PresentNew ZealandWhile working as a Health, Safety and Environmental (HSE) manager and auditor, one of my major responsibilities was to ensure compliance with safety and environmental management systems and plans. I found that a common barrier to compliance was the proliferation of badly written, unclear, and confusing operating procedures. Workers simply didn't understand them.Similar problems also exist in other industries, so once I retired from HSE roles I decided to turn my hand to assisting those in the publishing, marketing and academic industries to produce high quality publications and documents.Because my experience spans aviation, oil and gas, petro-chemical processing, power generation and steel making, my technical understanding enables me to help prepare documents that workers of all reading abilities can understand and follow. As health and safety law becomes more stringent, adherence becomes more important. But companies cannot expect 100% compliance if their staff do not know what they should be doing. By assisting organisations with these documents, I help improve compliance levels. -
Chief Copy EditorWord Wizard 2018 - PresentEven a wordsmith needs a proof reader, copy editor and general error spotter. And I'm it for Word Wizard. In the year since I have been part of the team, I have proofed and copy edited dozens of LinkedIn articles and posts, case studies and blogs, web pages and company profiles. Word Wizard owner Lynnaire Johnston says, 'When you're producing copy at speed, it is essential that someone has your back. Someone who not only spots the mistakes but takes the time to check facts to ensure content inaccuracies are spotted before copy is delivered to clients. The day Norm got in touch to report an error on my website, was the day I realised he was the answer to a problem I didn't know I had. My copy has improved dramatically thanks to his efforts.' -

Safety And Systems AuditorSinger Maintenance Ltd 2003 - 2008Huntly Power StationI was employed to address the high incidence of Lost Time Injuries—around 15 a year. By 2004/5 this had dropped to zero (and stayed there), largely because of close enforcement of and compliance with the Hazard Identification system. One aspect of this job I particularly enjoyed was writing safe operating procedures for all routine maintenance tasks carried out onsite. These SOPs were also used as the standards to which staff were trained. The company was independently audited to comply with NZ Accident Compensation Corporation accreditation. The systems I put in place gained the company Tertiary Status, reducing its ACC levies by 20%.
