While working as a Health, Safety and Environmental (HSE) manager and auditor, one of my major responsibilities was to ensure compliance with safety and environmental management systems and plans. I found that a common barrier to compliance was the proliferation of badly written, unclear, and confusing operating procedures. Workers simply didn't understand them.Similar problems also exist in other industries, so once I retired from HSE roles I decided to turn my hand to assisting those in the publishing, marketing and academic industries to produce high quality publications and documents.Because my experience spans aviation, oil and gas, petro-chemical processing, power generation and steel making, my technical understanding enables me to help prepare documents that workers of all reading abilities can understand and follow.As health and safety law becomes more stringent, adherence becomes more important. But companies cannot expect 100% compliance if their staff do not know what they should be doing. By assisting organisations with these documents, I help improve compliance levels.

At NZ Steel I oversaw all safety aspects of Project Atom which involved 200 contractors. This included designing and delivering inductions, implementing the Safe System of Work procedures for JSEAs and permits, carrying out accident and incident investigations, and advising management on safety issues.

All refractory work involves confined space entry procedures and often breathing apparatus. My role focused on ensuring compliance with the principal's HSE procedures and contractor requirements governing safety of employees while working on large industrial sites such as Bluescope Steel, Methanex, NZ Refining Company, and Fonterra etc. I also maintained compliance with AS/NZS 4801, ISO 9001 & ISO 14001.

Huntly Power Station

I was employed to address the high incidence of Lost Time Injuries—around 15 a year. By 2004/5 this had dropped to zero (and stayed there), largely because of close enforcement of and compliance with the Hazard Identification system. One aspect of this job I particularly enjoyed was writing safe operating procedures for all routine maintenance tasks carried out onsite. These SOPs were also used as the standards to which staff were trained. The company was independently audited to comply with NZ Accident Compensation Corporation accreditation. The systems I put in place gained the company Tertiary Status, reducing its ACC levies by 20%.
