Systems Engineering

Jan 2024 - Present

Systems Engineering

As a systems engineer, I coordinated closely with Legal, Software Engineering, Product, Operations, and others to write more than 100 requirements for driving behaviors, faults, and ODD management. I created data-driven metrics and pass criteria to assess those requirements, then developed and enacted test plans to verify and validate those requirements, both real-world and in sim. I monitored autonomous vehicle performance through a variety of means and regularly triaged driving events. I mined and analyzed data from *extremely* large datasets using SQL and other tools. I also analyzed safety and other forms of risk across a range of driving behaviors.

Feb 2020 - Dec 2023

Associate Engineer

San Jose, Ca

I lead a team of 5 engineers, technicians, and interns in the Infrastructure Maintenance section of DOT. We use GIS, SQL, and Access to monitor the City's 45,000 sewer pipes covering over 2000 linear miles, and use that data to prioritize cleaning and repair. I love finding inefficiencies in our methodologies and figuring out how to eliminate them. To prevent problems from arising in the first place, I review engineering plans for new storm and sanitary sewer systems and coordinate with various stakeholders as needed. I coordinate training and development opportunities for my staff, and manage workload for the group by carefully tracking projects and deadlines. My work keeps our team organized and keeps processes running smoothly.

Engineer Ii - Traffic Signal Design

San Jose, Ca

I briefly worked as an engineer for the department’s traffic signal design group. My main focus was to manage and administer the grant-funded OBAG Pedestrian-Oriented Traffic Signals project. I also reviewed engineering plans for the design of traffic signals and intersection improvements and responded to customer concerns about safety issues at or near signalized intersections.

Feb 2017 - Apr 2017

Engineer Ii - Traffic Signal Operations

San Jose, Ca

For nearly two years, I worked in the “brains” of the City’s traffic signal system - our Signal Operations group. Our goal was to monitor and improve traffic flow on a daily basis by optimizing signal timing and coordinating nearby signals. We also regularly responded to customer inquiries about the timing of traffic signals and malfunction of vehicle sensors.I managed a $200,000 signal retiming contract to improve traffic flow on nine major commute corridors, as well as a smaller grant-funded signal coordination project through MTC. I was also the manager for a $200,000 traffic data acquisition contract, which provided useful data to groups throughout the department.I spearheaded efforts to gather and intelligently use big data to determine and prioritize the roads in the City where traffic flow has degraded the most and which need the most attention. I used traffic flow data from INRIX through MTC, and worked on acquiring vehicle occupancy and speed data from other sources, to provide a big-picture idea of how traffic is changing throughout the City and how to best respond to those changes.

Jul 2015 - Feb 2017

Engineer I - Operations System Management

San José, California

My first job with San Jose was effectively as a systems engineer, where I worked in the Operations System Management group within the Department of Transportation.I helped develop a Request for Proposals (RFP) for a multi-million dollar software system used to manage and graphically display events occurring on or affecting City streets. I helped develop and improve parts of both the Concept of Operations (ConOps) and System Requirements for the software. I used IBM Rational Requirements software (the predecessor to DOORS) to manage requirements and ensure traceability. I also helped supervise construction of the City's new Transportation Incident Management Center (TiMC). I worked with our Contractor and consulting Architect to make any necessary design changes and to alleviate any problems that arose during construction.
