I research pathways to computing careers outside of college degrees, especially those accessible to adults transitioning from hourly wage jobs who would like to learn technical skills through work. My research aims to challenge gatekeeping culture in computing by broadening computing learning pathways and career options for working adults.At Georgia Tech, I work with Dr. Betsy DiSalvo and the team at DataWorks, using a participatory research approach to develop work-based learning programs in computing in collaboration with workers. Through this work we are characterizing middle-wage computing work and examining barriers to workers’ success in procuring middle-wage roles. Before pursuing doctoral work, I worked as a software developer for over 10 years. I studied art in my undergraduate, and gatekeeping encounters during my informal pathway to a computing career are a primary motivation for my research.
