About Nova Courchene
Nova Courchene is a multi-passionate Anishinaabekwe. She is the Co-Director of Native Youth Theatre, an Anishinaabemowin Language Learner, Visual/Graphic Design Artist, emerging Playwright, Writer, and Outreach Drama Educator dedicated to making theatre accessible to Indigenous youth and Indigenous communities. Her mother is from Rolling River First Nation and her father is from Sagkeeng First Nation, Nova is currently for hire Drama Workshops with Youth, Freelance Graphic Design Art, Visual Artist, Writer, and Indigenous Languages Resource Development. She is currently working with Pembina Trail School Division, commissioning for her visual artwork into large format wall murals. Her artwork is based around Anishnaabe traditional knowledge and teachings. When working with different Indigenous groups, she collaborates and coordinates to bring other traditional teachings from local Elders, Knowledge Keepers and respectable community members. She works with Manitoba Theatre for Young People in the Theatre School Outreach Program, where she visits schools in rural Manitoba and provides theatre workshops to schools as a Drama Educator. She brings Indigenous Storytelling to theatre workshops by introducing local oral histories, and incorporates traditional knowledge from local communities to help embody different Indigenous groups traditional knowledge and teachings in providing theatre workshops. Many of her workshops conclude with a performance from the young people.She holds a part-time position as the Co-Director at the Native Youth Theatre program, run out of Manitoba Theatre for Young People.
