Software Engineer InternMicrosoft Jul 2008 - Oct 2008Belgrade, SerbiaThis was a wild internship.Well, technically it was TWO full internships compressed into one. 👇I ended up shipping code to production as part of both SQL Server and Windows. And I got to work with David Nistér, who later became Tesla's VP for Autopilot. Here's how it went down...I was the first intern in Dragan's SQL Server spatial team. It was 5 people. I was 6th.My internship project: increase the precision of the SQL Server's spatial library. It turns out SQL Server can store geographical data and do all kinds of smart spatial computations.Things like: "what are all steak restaurants within 10 miles of I-5 highway?"I improved the library's precision from 10cm to 10nm.Before the improvement, you could use the library to do an office furniture layout on a real scale. After, you could design CPU chip layout on a real scale :)The catch: the library was shared with the Windows team.So I got to work with them as part of perf testing. And where is David, Tesla's VP Autopilot here?He helped me with my SECOND internship.David had a cool image search library. You could give it an image and it would match it with thousand other images based on what's IN THE image.Dragan thought it would be cool if SQL Server could do this.He gave me both problems to explore for 2 weeks before we decide which one is a better fit for me.I ended up doing both. In parallel.Overachiever, I know.I loved both internships. They both connected my love for math to my love for making things in different and unexpected ways.Spatial Precision Improvement was very exact, detail-oriented and, well, all about precision :) And performance.I got to practice C++, navigating around large high-performance math-heavy codebase.Image Search was a project for hackers.I got to learn k-means, feature extraction, and vision tricks before ML was cool.SPOILER ALERT: Dragan ended up being my manager for 10 years and we grew that 5 person team together to 150 people -
