About Nova Peris Oam Oly Maicd
Nova Peris OAM was Australia's first Aboriginal woman elected to Federal Parliament as a Senator for the Northern Territory. She was the first Aboriginal Australian and Northern Territorian to win an Olympic Gold Medal.Nova Peris is one of a very few athletes who have represented their country in two different sports and win gold; hockey & athletics, and separate Olympic Games. She is the only person in the entire world to make back to back Summer Olympic Games finals in two different sports!Drawing from her unique experiences in sport, government and as a leader within Australia's Aboriginal community, Nova Peris is an incredible Australian that gives enormous credibility to any organisation that wants to work or partner with her. Nova doesn’t just give her name to causes, she involves herself at all levels from the planning phase to the execution of programs. During her three years in Federal Parliament, Nova travelled the length of Australia in her tireless endeavours to champion the causes and struggles facing Aboriginal people. Pride in her Aboriginal identity is a vital ingredient in her fight for the rights of all people, Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal alike. She inspires young people to take pride in who they are, but she also works hard at changing attitudes throughout the Australian community. Nova has fought for Aboriginal people to have a better life and to heal Australian society in many ways. As a treaty ambassador for the former Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Commission (ATSIC), she has travelled extensively to 104 Aboriginal communities throughout all of Australia while campaigning for equality between black and white. She has served in roles that include being an International Indigenous Human Rights Ambassador and also a National Ambassador for Reconciliation Australia. She has actively participated in promotional and advocacy campaigns for domestic violence, youth depression and youth suicide. Indeed, she was an inaugural Board Member and acted as National Patron for Beyond Blue. Nova has also served as the International Ambassador for the World Health Organisation & Griffith University Youth Suicide Prevention, and as an International Ambassador for Hepatitis Australia. Moreover, in 2012, she established the Nova Peris Girls’ Academy, to provide opportunities for education and training for young Aboriginal girls. Nova can also be booked as a keynote speaker where her visual speeches take you on a roller coaster of emotions showcasing the great Australian story she has, one of triumph over adversity.
