Pharmazz, Inc. is a biopharmaceutical start-up focused on developing drug products for multiple critical care procedures. Working as a Student Research Assistant, I gained valuable experience working on investigative new drug (IND) filings with the FDA for Centhaquine, a novel drug focused on treating hypovolemic shock. This IND has been subequently apporoved by FDA. I facilitated the filings by compiling sources and working to help analyze, collate and incorporate the results while ensuring that they met the requisite standards. Additionally, I co-authored a literature review on the pharmacological utility of endothelin-B receptors by synthesizing and critically analyzing up-to-date information and citing relevant sources. This review was intended to give a clear picture about the potential efficacy of Sovateltide, an ET-B agonist, in treating neurodegenerative illnesses, and is currently undergoing final edits before submission to “Neuropharmacology.”

The Eatock Lab at UChicago is focused on studying the vestibular inner ear to determine broader neurobiological conclusions especially related to transduction of mechanical stimuli and afferent neuron encoding. As a research intern matched through a summer program, I used advanced imaging software (IMARIS) to design and map vestibular neurons and investigate the roles of specialized ion channels in synaptic transmission mechanisms. I presented this research to my peers in the summer program, which improved my ability to communicate my ideas in research and exchange innovative thoughts and concepts. I also served as a research assistant, working with graduate students on 2 other long-term projects: investigating voltage-gated ion channels & vestibular afferents and the influence of potassium currents on sensory transmission.

Game Changers Chicago, a department under the Center for Interdisciplinary Inquiry and Innovation in Sexual and Reproductive Health, works to intersect art, story-telling, healthcare, and technology to develop innovative interventions for high-school aged youth. In this program, I I worked with a team of experienced researchers, undergraduate, and graduate students to develop a game that helps educate teens especially in the LGBTQIA+ minority communities about making safe sexual decisions. I generated a literature review of over 55 scientific studies and meta-analyses specifically related to STD and HIV/AIDS prevention, effective youth education, and consent.

The Teen Work Study program at Shedd Aquarium allowed me to gain employment at one of the largest aquariums in the country while also focusing on my education at the same time. As a Young Naturalist, I learned how to effectively communicate scientific information about individual animals with guests and enrich animal exhibitions from experienced staff members and scientific personnel. I also facilitated the experience of younger guests by leading play learning and other educational experiences. Finally, I worked in a variety of community building projects around the Chicago-land area to give back to the surrounding areas. Participating in the Teen-Work Study also gave me the opportunity to hone professional skills such as teamwork, leadership, and networking while working with peers who are passionate about marine ecology. Eventually, I worked my way up to designing and leading walking tours.
