Working as the research and development engineer for Georg Fischer Harvel, I am primarily responsible for the design of new thermoplastic pipe and fitting products and processes. I also engage in the improvement of current designs. When developing new products, I apply a great amount of critical thinking and creativity by means of various innovative design processes such as IDEO Design Thinking and the Stage-Gate Process. I design and conduct experiments to determine the technical and economic feasibility of critical aspects of an innovative idea. I generate sketches, drawings, and 3D models of the idea to be machined, molded, or printed into 3D prototypes. Further analysis is performed by utilizing principles of mechanics of materials, statics, and dynamics to analyze the physical designs. I apply knowledge of various national and international standard specifications (ASTM, ISO, etc.) to develop products that meet these regulations. Once settled on a final design, I work with manufacturing to see the product through to final production, performing appropriate qualification and performance tests along the way. In testing and analyzing current designs, I coordinate tests to qualify our products to new markets which may have more rigorous standards. After initiating the tests, I generate technical reports that document my findings. If the tests fail, I look for ways to improve our product and propose those to higher management.

Duties included the designing of new products and custom products; review of product deviations by Manufacturing; providing technical support to marketing, customers, and/or distributors; maintaining CAD/SolidWorks drawing files; Supervising and assisting in the training of product development engineers and testing technicians.
