SparkMeter provides an end-to-end metering solution to facilitate electrification to underserved peoples throughout the world. As a co-founder and the only hardware engineer, I architected and designed SM’s hardware. SM’s meters incorporate features such as wireless mesh networking and regulatory compliance found in smart meters costing $100’s at a cost of $10’s. SM products are in 30+ countries and 500+ deployments.As the VP of Hardware Engineering/Principal Engineer, I accomplished the following:• Designed SM’s first smart meter• Expanded the product line to include higher amperage meter models and 3 phase• Vetted US contract manufacturers (cm) before establishing manufacturing of SM meters with a cm in VA• Certified SM’s meters to industry standards (IEC62052-11, IEC62053-21)• Expanded and continuously improved SM manufacturing capability using lean manufacturing methods; reduced test time to ~1min to test per meter; Achieved a throughput of ~250 meters per day• Developed global supply chain by fostering collaboration and win-win partnerships• Partnered with South Korean vendor to design and certify a lower cost radio module used in SM products; low NRE; module certified for FCC (US), CE (Europe/Africa), WRC (India)• Partnered with a Chinese meter manufacturer to integrate SM’s radio module with their products; Resulted in product margin: ~+25%• Partnered with South Africa enclosure manufacturer; Resulted in ~60% cost reduction for enclosures• Implemented a product life cycle management system (Arena) for BOM management• Developed SM’s proprietary meter management computer; Certified to IEC61010; In production at a cm in New Jersey• Built SM’s hardware lab for development, field failure return analysis, and QA testing • Spearheaded complex problem resolution in high visibility and critical urgency operations environment• Managed and mentored junior engineers and interns• Managed contractors (hardware design, pcb layout, tech, production)

Osram Sylvania had recently established an LED lighting group when I joined as a special technology engineer. The LED lighting group developed led bulbs and luminaires for consumer and commercial use in the “Americas” market. I developed the electrical drivers for the bulbs and luminaires. My group pioneered and develop a common driver platform. This allowed multiple products to be developed in less than 6 months, reliably pass long term Energy Star in situ tests, and meet stringent cost targets to insure market competitiveness at product release. The resulting products were successfully released into market at volumes of 10k’s to 100k’s.

Satcon was a market leading provider of utility scale inverters (30kW to 1.5MW). As a senior engineer, I was engaged in the design, development, planning, procurement, and project management of the “Solstice” Sub-Combiner (i.e. high power DC to DC converter that performed maximum power point tracking (mppt) at the string level). The sub-combiner allowed the overall “Solstice” inverter system to achieve a CEC (California Energy Commission) weighted efficiency of 96.5%.

Core Source Technologies provided world class product development services for clients, ranging from large companies, government, institutional R&D labs, to startups. As the only hardware engineer, I assisted clients in all aspects of product development (concept, electrical/mechanical design, pcb design, bill of materials/procurement, technical project management, functional test, compliance, etc.). I realized products ranging from marine telecom system, explosion proof telecom system for space launch, to reading lights for Amazon Kindles.

GridPoint provided hardware and software solutions for the smart grid. I designed, prototyped, tested, and developed pioneering devices for the GridPoint eco system ranging from: grid tie pv inverter, grid tie residential energy storage, electrical panels for load management, smart thermostat, ev chargers, and single board computer used to coordinate other devices. In 2005, I was the only hardware engineer along with 20 employees/contractors; Through our efforts, by 2008 GridPoint raised nearly $220 million, grew to over 150+ employees, expanded to include offices in Seattle and Ottawa, and was generally regarded as the leader in the smart grid market.

Fusion UV Systems was a company that designed and manufactured high power rf coupled electrode-less uv lamp systems used in industrial curing. As part of the R&D/Engineering team, I worked to develop state-of-the-art uv lamps systems using switching power supplies. I designed, developed, and tested the analog, digital, and electro-mechanical components of the system’s high voltage/power switching power supplies (6kW and 10kW, 4kV). I engaged with 3rd party test labs (i.e. NRTL)’s for safety certifications of the products. Additionally, I worked closely with manufacturing to ensure the products were designed for manufacturability using lean manufacturing methods by creating and continuously improving test plans and test fixtures that I designed. These systems helped Fusion UV maintain their leadership in the industrial uv curing market and resulted in lower operating cost for the end customer.

Asha Electric was a company I co-founded, which was engaged in the development of a patented three-phase device for the utility market. I designed, prototyped, tested, and developed the analog, digital, magnetics, and electro-mechanical sub-systems/components. Additionally, I negotiated with vendors in the supply chain and pitched investors. This device reduced the harmonics and created near unity power factor in a three-phase power distribution system, thus reducing the cost to operate T&D (transmission and distribution).

Commonwealth Scientific Corporation (CSC) manufactured high power ion sources used in the preparation of silicon wafers. As part of the R&D group, I worked to develop a state-of-the-art high voltage switching power supply (6kV,10kW; Full Bridge) for a new ion source product. I designed, prototyped, tested, and developed the internal power supply, magnetics, and controls for the system. Additionally, I was engaged in supply chain procurement, testing, and interfacing with customer for field issues. The power supply was easier to install, more reliable, provided more control and safety features, and was more efficient than the industry standard power sources.
