40 years ago, the day I was born, my grandmother prophesied that I was to be a pastor. I hated that notion just hanging over my life. When I went off to college, where I was kicked out after the second semester, I ran from that prophesy. I, quite literally, made every bad decision a person could make. I’ve been in jail multiple times. I’ve been arrested multiple times. I’ve been shot at multiple times. I’ve been stabbed multiple times. I’ve woke up next to corpses multiple times. I created living hell for those who were foolish enough to love me. And the prophesy from my grandmother remained. When I got clean, when I came back into my faith, when I woke up from a drug induced haze, when I repented, I came to find out that God had been there the whole time. Waiting. I swore I’d be dead by 40 and when I turned 40, well, it struck me that I still hadn’t fulfilled the prophesy over my life. I’ve done ministry for the last seven years. I started out with homelessness advocacy. Bringing justice and hope to those experiencing homelessness. I moved into a church building and have been doing ministry in a United Methodist context for the last couple of years. And the prophesy from my grandmother remains. So, here I am. Begging God to move me into the call on my life. To give me the gift of a congregation to serve fully. I’m in seminary and I will be pursuing my PhD. But, I’m ready. My story is one of redemption and resurrection and, during this season, I can think of nothing better than to begin to connect with you about the possibility of serving your congregation. The prophesy from my grandmother remains a constant in my life. The thing that I am purpose built for. The hope that I have on this side of the death, damnation, and ruination I have caused. May we be able to partner together so that all in your community may find life in their resurrections, as well.
