Attractions Cast Member
Attractions Cast Members at Disneyland are primarily responsible for operating and overseeing the safety of experiences such as character meet-&-greets, play areas, rides, and shows. This requires Cast Members to consistently provide guests with outstanding service, to execute crowd control procedures, to resolve guest concerns in an appropriate manner, and to respond to break-down or emergency situations with composure and efficiency. While operating any rides which utilize heavy machinery, Cast Members are additionally responsible for ensuring that guests meet or exceed height requirements, that ride vehicle restraints such as belts or lap-bars are properly locked in-place, and that ride vehicle motion is immediately halted if a potential hazard presents itself. With a strong emphasis on creating a uniquely ‘magical’ experience for Disneyland’s guests, this positionhas given me the opportunity to hone my skills in communication, customer service, and problem-solving. Working closely with other cast members in a fast-paced and dynamic environment has also reinforced my ability to remain calm and composed, specifically in high-pressure situations.
Volunteer
Through my volunteer placement with the European Solidarity Corps in Germany, I had the privilege of spending six incredibly fulfilling weeks contributing to online advertising campaigns for the organization's youth programs. It was an exciting opportunity to gain valuable insights into the world of social media campaigns. Additionally, I had the honor of being part of a dynamic four-person leadership team, responsible for facilitating a training course that aimed to address anti-democratic sentiments among young people. The course attracted 21 participants from 4 different countries, all of whom were aged 15 to 28. In addition to facilitating icebreakers, evening programming, and our intercultural night, I personally developed and presented a two-hour workshop on the value of grassroots advocacy movements which was extremely well-received.
Senior Instructor/School Lead
Students aged 9-14 come to Pali Institute for overnight stays of 3-5 days as a group with their school. While at Pali, they are placed into cabins of (generally) 6-12 students, under the supervision of an instructor who serves as their ‘cabin counselor.’ Cabin counselors are responsible for their assigned students’ emotional, mental, and physical wellbeing while at Pali. Counselors additionally sleep in the same building as their children, eat meals with them, enjoy scheduled time for breaks throughout the day with them, and serve as the primary source of support for them throughout their stay. When not with cabin groups, instructors take up to 24 students at a time in ‘activity groups.’ While in these activity groups, instructors lead children in California state-accredited science courses covering topics such as aerodynamics, biology, conservation, electromagnetism, and engineering. Pali also offers a limited number of traditional camp activities such asarchery, arts-&-crafts, team-building, wilderness survival, and zip-lining. Activities last either 1½ or 3 hours. Instructors are expected to project a high level of energy and fun while also maintaining an environment of safety. Key skills used both in-cabin and during activities include conflict resolution, emotional intelligence, improvisation, multi-tasking, patience, and public speaking.Halfway through the Fall season, I was selected to serve as a 'school leader.' School leading is a seniorposition at Pali which puts instructors in-charge of a given school group. I have led school groups with asfew as 20 students, and I have also led groups with over 300 students. In addition to standard instructorresponsibilities, school leaders communicate schedule changes to staff, foster staff wellbeing, reportrelevant concerns/updates to Pali leadership, and serve as the primary point-of-contact for their assignedschool's chaperones (usually teachers or parents).
Program Director
My position oversaw the development and implementation of afternoon activities, campfire programming, immersive 'story experiences' for every cabin, and our highly elaborate evening games/events. To make all of this happen successfully, my average day at Camp Augusta regularly involved developing daily/weekly schedules, purchasing supplies online, responding to emails, making last-minute changes to plans based on staffing and resource availability, inputting survey data, working on the Master of Fun & Games' annual report, organizing programming supplies, as well as coordinating with over 40 staff members on a daily basis to communicate the specific tasks which they were responsible for.
Camp Counselor
Cabin counselors at Camp Esquagama are responsible for a cabin of 4-10 children every week. These children may range in age from 8-17. Throughout the week, cabin counselors lead a variety of engaging activities/classes for our campers, eat meals alongside them, foster healthy emotional growth, and ensure their physical and mental wellbeing. I was additionally trained and certified as a deep water lifeguard, which tasked me with taking on additional responsibility and overseeing safety during the camp's water-based activities.
Program Lead
As one of two volunteer program leads for the YMCA of The East Valley's Model UN and Teens & Government programs during the 2020-2021 school year, my duties entailed communicating information to participants and their guardians, communicating with statewide program leadership, leading relevant educational activities with youth aged 11-17, attending monthly statewide conferences via Zoom, lesson planning for weekly meetings, facilitating debate sessions, and organizing guest speakers.
