I help Chicago-based nonprofits and friends with communications infrastructure and strategy to amplify their work for the public good, or sometimes just to tell their stories.

I created an online visual reference gallery that helps museum curators identify some of the most difficult spiders in North America – the minute female Linyphiidae. Also involved in maintenance and improvement of the arthropod collection. Associate status as of 2002.

I consulted on communications and technology, implementing solutions for online effectiveness and internal empowerment. The Chicago-based nonprofit (formerly Health & Disability Advocates) leaves a 28-year legacy of public policy and education around access to care and economic security.

My tasks involved the digital side of IHM's mission to help individuals, small businesses and community groups in Illinois navigate the details of the Affordable Care Act. I upgraded website navigation and usability to meet the needs of the ACA implementation surge and created Data Matters to showcase data-driven storytelling about the uninsured in Illinois. For the second enrollment period, I relaunched the site in mobile-friendly Bootstrap-based responsive format.

I was responsible for all aspects of this award-winning national trade publication's online presence. This included web development, content management, system integration, project management, SEO and business strategy for the website and all electronic products, as well as ensuring data integrity of content. I also researched and wrote an extended article on the over-diagnosis of brown recluse spider bite.

I was part of the paper's small, fast-paced production operation, and increasingly served as Internet resource to the department.

Although one and the same as the position above, the corporate-facing side of my work took me outside the department to team with AMA colleagues in Internet Services and IT, and required active collaboration with numerous areas in Publishing (which produced American Medical News as well as JAMA).

I worked as a writer, editor, researcher, data analyst and “document repair” person for state and municipal governments, consultancies and nonprofit organizations working in the public interest. My projects revolved around the power of data and the stories it can tell.
