Fitbay.com is a social network where people with similar bodies and styles can find inspiration and sizing help.I was hired as a full-stack developer, but quickly transitioned into a pure backend position, as that was where I was needed. The backend tech stack when I was hired was composed of a MySQL database, a REST API written in PHP. In the timespan that I worked there we took the tech stack, which didn’t scale sufficiently, and evolved it into a highly scalable infrastructure comprised of a MySQL cluster, a sharded PostgreSQL cluster, an Elasticsearch setup, and an event bus implemented using Kafka. In addition, the former PHP REST api was migrated to Scala, which enabled us to do a lot in terms of multi-threading and data streaming. The backend was consumed by a SPA built using Backbone Marionette, along with native iOS and Android apps.During my two years in Fitbay, I took the responsibility upon myself to coordinate tasks across development teams. We were four teams – backend, web, iOS, and android – with a total of 11 developers. We had an agile development cycle with sprints lasting between 2-4 weeks. During sprints I facilitated several meetings including sprint planning, interface alignment and sprint evaluation in order to ease communication between teams. In addition we had daily status meetings along the lines of a SCRUM stand-up. I communicated with the team deciding the product direction in order to make sure that features were delivered within their respective deadlines and according to specifications.
