• Tracked agency legislation through the General Assembly and the agency's internal approval process prior to review by the Governor’s Office.• Oversaw agency new reporting and review process on issues assigned by the General Assembly • Coordinated with senior staff on the agency's legislative priorities and communicate with key stakeholders.

• Managed a team of over 15 public safety agency legislative liaisons, provided policy direction and administrative guidance.• Wrote speeches, press statements, and talking points for the Secretary.• Conducted research on various public safety policy matters and studies directed by the General Assembly.• Collaborated with cabinet officials in health and agriculture and other relevant stakeholders on developing the newly created Cannabis Control Authority.• Staffed and handled logistics for multiple Governor’s workgroups and commissions (i.e., prison population forecasting and the Body Worn Camera Workgroups).

• Managed relationships between the Governor and stakeholders during public events and meetings.• Oversaw a staff of three to provide continuous coverage for Governor Northam during public events and meetings.• Coordinated with senior staff on the Governor’s daily schedule and briefed him on upcoming events.

• Tracked finance related legislation through DPB database; shared updates at daily meetings with cabinet-level members and deputies during the General Assembly session.• Staffed and coordinated visits and meetings with the Secretary and other members of the office. • Oversaw the Secretary’s constituent mail and correspondence with state agencies.

• Assessed over 10,000 probation revocation worksheets prepared by judges, probation officers, and Commonwealth’s Attorneys for accuracy and recorded them in a database.• Supported training for lawyers and probation officers on sentencing and probation guidelines. • Oversaw the annual distribution of revised guidelines to all Commonwealth’s Attorneys, public defenders, probation officers, and court districts.

Selected for the Governor’s Fellows Summer Program and was positioned in the Office of the Secretary of Finance. During the program, I learned about the processes of the Governor’s Office and multiple stage agencies. I met with various members of Governor Northam’s cabinet and other senior executive branch officials and presented a policy presentation to senior staff on affordable community college in the Commonwealth.

The Capitol Semester program places students with a state legislator and is in tandem with a seminar course where we hear from members of the Executive and Legislative branches on their roles in forming legislation. As a program participant, I assisted Senator Howell's chief of staff by tracking pending legislation, managing relationships with stakeholders, and following General Assembly session and committee meetings; met with visitors (e.g., constituents and lobbyists) to discuss their interests and questions regarding pending legislation on the senator’s priorities.
