What started in 1972 as a modest rugby event with only 12 teams, has grown today into one of the best and most successful Sevens tournaments in the world. The Amsterdam Sevens is one of the top 7 tournaments in the Rugby 7s calendar, with 80 teams from 25 countries competing in 2019. Over 15,000 players, supporters and sponsors enjoy a thrilling three days of top rugby in festival spirit. It's a privilege to have been Chairman of the Amstelveense Rugby Club, of which I have been a member since the '70s. Our international rugby club has currently approx 550 members, of whom 250 are youth players. Our 1st XV plays in the premier division ('Ereklasse') and we have a team for everybody - male and female - who wants to pull on a pair of rugby boots and play the game played in heaven. My responsibilities include safeguarding the social wellbeing of handicapped rugby players in the Netherlands. I was a committee member for 10 years prior to being appointed to the chair in 1997, and an advisor and ambassador after 2007. I was appointed interim Chairman from 2015 to 2016.
