About Nuno Gil

Completing my book for MIT Press, Megaprojects and Society: A Theory of Purpose, Value Creation and Value Distribution is my priority. How come, I ask, a phenomena so central to economic production and social welfare- the production of capital-intensive systems such as infrastructure - is still so poorly understood? In my theory, I see ‘megaprojects’ as social technologies that are designed by people with a purpose, which is to create economic & social value. To achieve it, a vast bundle of resources needs to be assembled. Some resources exist in-house or can be purchased on the market. Others are nonmarket resourcesCrucially, the need to acquire nonmarket resources has increased substantially in recent years. This reflects our growing consciousness as a society for wider social and environmental issues. So, a wider duty of care. Whichever governance choice we make to acquire nonmarket resources – bilateral trade or non-hierarchical collective action - managers have to renegotiate the value distribution to one that society sees fair. And yet, we lack robust methods to define, count and verify social gains. How to succeed in this complex situation is today's challenge informing my workSo, I ask are: How is megaproject behavior affected by contingencies such as: i) institutions and norms? ii) Technological architectures - modular vs integral? iii) Buyer-supplier contracts – arm’s length vs relational? Governance choices? How can megaprojects harness AI-ML ? How can we exploit digitalization and lean thinking ? And how can we draw from global reporting initiatives and sustainable accounting standards to create purpose-driven megaprojects? Further, I'm enthusiastic about harnessing this research agenda to help tackle today's grand challenges from rapid urbanization to climate change and Global South development. As an educator, I believe it's my responsibility to equip future leaders to succeed in seemingly chaotic settings, in an imperfect world where professional norms are misaligned from task complexity. A world where justifying the cost of compliance with societal expectations is hard and yet one needs to lead with a conscience that creating social and environmental value is not a choice. It's an obligationTo impact policy is also part of my work. I believe it's time to stop avoiding the issues; stop playing this game where success is defined by whether we deliver on target & maximize economic returns. Money cannot be the currency to measure success. We need to codify and credit societal gains to create enabling environments for success
