Nigel Unwin Email and Phone Number
I am a public health physician and researcher, with strong track record in studying the burden, prevention and control of diabetes, cardiovascular conditions and related chronic diseases. Over the past few years I have developed a strong interest in the links between food production and planetary and human health and well-being. Working to improve and reduce global inequities in human health and wealth, while at the same time securing environmentally sustainable development, is the challenge of our age. How we produce and use our food is fundamental to meeting this challenge. In contributing to this area I am helping to lead work aiming to promote sustainable food production linked to improved human nutrition, and doing this in collaboration with colleagues in agricultural, social, economic and population health sciences.

Professor Of Population Health SciencesUniversity Of The West Indies: Cavehill Sep 2014 - Mar 2016Chronic Disease Research Centre, Tropical Medicine Research InstituteMy research interests concern the prevention and control of Chronic Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs), particularly diabetes and cardiovascular disease. Current active research projects include: investigating the socio-economic distribution and determinants of NCDs in the Caribbean; evaluating and providing guidance on government policy measures to address NCDs, and in particular coordinating an evaluation of the 2007 CARICOM Heads of Government Declaration on NCDs; conducting a feasibility study in Barbados into the reversal of type 2 diabetes through a very low calorie diet; and completing the analysis and write up of a detailed population based survey of NCD risk factors, which included objective measures of physical activity and sodium intake. I continue to contribute to graduate public health training at the University of the West Indies through teaching on the Master in Public Health at Cave Hill, supervising PhD students in Public Health and Epidemiology, and supervising students on the Doctorate in Public Health.
