I am an avid sailor. Sailing has taught me the value of knowing where you are going, before you leave the safety of the harbor. Charting out your course serves as a guide, a reference on which to fall back. Should you find yourself stuck in the fog, you can keep moving forward.Sailing has also shown me the value of having a "plan b". No matter how well prepared you may be, there will come a time when the environment changes so dramatically that your original plan no longer applies. The difference between having, or not having, a "plan b" could be the difference between arriving safely at your destination, or sitting in your life raft, with your entire crew, hoping there is someone nearby to help. Sailing is a team effort. Each person has a specific job. Knowing how and why each job is important to the functioning of the boat as a whole is critical. Practice makes perfect. Through practice, the crew learns how to work together when things are going well, but also how to handle things should circumstance dictate falling back on "plan b". And, again, the crew must practice, practice,practice. They need to be able to do their jobs blindfolded. When the crew knows their jobs by heart, there is less chance of needing to fall back on "plan b".Not every ship that sets out to sea reaches harbor safely. The storms come up, and some founder; or the fog sets in, and others lose their way. The crew gets scared, or loses faith in the skipper. They no longer tend to their respective jobs. The sails begin luffing, and the ship loses headway; or, the ship simply goes around in circles.
