At Metro Silicon Valley, an alternative weekly based in San Jose, I managed a team of freelance writers and photographers, along with a small group of interns. I fielded their pitches, assigned them stories and edited their work for grammar, AP and Metro's house style, narrative flow and the big picture. I also worked with the paper’s design team to ensure our pages looked clean; I sourced art, wrote headlines and captions, and kept an eye out for awkward line breaks and widows.I also balanced editorial judgment against the more business-oriented concerns of our sales team and publisher, and worked with our web team to troubleshoot issues on our various online properties.I posted stories to our WordPress sites, optimizing for SEO and pushed those same stories out on social media—crafting punchy Facebook status updates and tweets to help our work stand out from the rest of the noise.

Served as managing editor, copy editor, writer, graphic design and layout for a small monthly music magazine in San Jose. The magazine folded in June of 2008.

Held various positions with the City of Fremont's Recreation Services over the course of four years, including director of Youth Service Corps summer camp, a work-service camp, which ran for six weeks each summer. Duties included, planning weeks in advance to coordinate summer activities, planning and coordinating field trips, dealing with disciplinary issues and parents of campers, supervising a staff of 10 employees and ultimately being responsible for the program and its 150 youth participants. In addition to directing the Youth Service Corps, I also assisted the city in various other youth-oriented activities—including booking local bands and running sound at concerts, working security at teen dances and private parties at community centers, event coordination and design of promotional material for events.

Proof reading articles writen by students for a student-run newspaper, San Jose State University's Spartan Daily. Duties include editing for Associated Press style, punctuation, grammar, spelling, correct usage, syntax, as well as alerting managing and executive editors to issues they may have missed. I am also responsible for calling writers if questions arise over names used in the story or for validation of quotations and facts.
