Goal: Create portable, disposable, user-friendly, paper-based microfluidic, viral/bacterial detection device for multiple pathogens such as methicillin-resistant staphylococcus aureus, Ebola, Influenza, Dengue, etc.Skills and achievements: • Designed and conducted tests in biosafety level 2 labs.• Verified the microfluidic device by collecting temperature data using thermocouples, designing experiments for testing chemical interaction, and performing medical device repeatability tests.• Fabricated the microfluidics device by designing parts in SOLIDWORKS, 3D printing, laser cutting, and constructing prototype in a clean room.

Goal: Create a wearable, noninvasive blood monitoring device for detection of multiple blood components including, but not limited to, glucose, hemoglobin, iron, albumin, etc.Skills and Achievements: • Drove product/engineering program initiatives by leading cross-functional engineers across mechanical, biomedical, chemical, and electrical engineering by creating a clear product goal and aligning team members.• Conducted, processed, analyzed experiments and drew conclusions from experimental data using industrial and prototype Raman Spectrometers and data filtering algorithms (MATLAB).• Developed a gold standard for our optical device testing by creating tissue phantoms that mimicked optical properties of human tissue, utilizing protocols from the Beckman Laser Institute.• Utilized Principal Component Analysis, Spatially Offset Raman Spectroscopy, and Bayesian Statistics to filter tissue optical data, isolate blood vessels from tissue, and isolate molecular structures from other blood components respectively. Achievements: • Cofounded a University Research team of 80+ engineering students, 3 laboratories, and 4 professors.• Filed provisional patent for medical device mentioned above.

Goal: Create a hand-held, portable, non-invasive spectrometer for measuring pulse rate and intravascular hemoglobin using a ring of LEDs in a spectral range, lenses, and a CMOS detector.Skills and Achievements: • Created device prototype by designing, ordering, and assembling optical hardware including lenses, LEDs, and CMOS detector. • Collaborated with the Virtual Photonics Group at the Beckman Laser Institute for software design for pulse rate calculation and hemoglobin concentration measurements. • Saved the team thousands of dollars by budgeting funds for device prototyping. • Created artificial human tissue samples that matched optical properties of real human tissue using protocols from the Beckman Laser Institute.
