Fleet is an internal design system to unify F5’s product portfolio, relying on robust guidelines and reusable components to accelerate development. The system allows designers and developers to shift their focus from building UI components to building the application itself, giving them more time and energy to craft workflows and experiences for their product.I was the primary designer and developer of Fleet’s HTML, SCSS, and JavaScript (VueJS) components. I led an inter-disciplinary team of UX designers, researchers, developers, technical communications, and other stakeholders to build the design system, and human-interface guidelines, applicable across the complete range of project requirements and at a wide range of front-end developer knowledge levels. I frequently collaborated with stakeholders and product managers across F5 Networks to advocate, increase adoption, and prioritize Fleet design system initiatives.Fleet was discontinued as part of a Design centralization effort and creation of an official Product Development wide Design System. Some of Fleet's technology and visual aspects are helping to influence the new Design System.

An inflexible product with a troubled development past, outdated visuals and interaction patterns, and an inability to integrate with the rest of the product was in major need of both a technology and visual update. The green light was finally given only when Adobe announced end-of-life for Flash. We used these opportunities as a learning opportunity to work through two iterations, first with the Dashboard and then with the Network Map, of the patterns we planned for the BIG-IP overhaul.I led and coordinated all facets of the redesign from start to finish, including: project scoping, requirements gathering, technology analysis, information architecture, user task flows, interaction flows, prototyping, and development. I also conducted user research using methods such as interviews, surveys, focus groups, and participatory design in order to address both user behavior and attitudes.As the principal designer it was my responsibility to provide the initial wireframes and broad-stroke composition of the design. These patterns were to be the first step in rationalizing the feasibility of a planned redesign of the product's graphical user interface. I then oversaw junior designers through the process of designing the atomic design elements and layout flows.

Traffic Policies allows users to create rules, executing one or more actions if a series of conditions are met, based on incoming traffic. The feature was built bottom-up with a data-driven GUI placed on top of a complicated data model at the end. The resulting GUI was over complicated and confusing. Properties were representational of the data structure, rather than the user’s mental model of the traffic passing through the system.We totally abandoned the old layout. Taking no context and no influence from the data-driven model, which was designed purely in the interest of the back-end developers.I conducted all facets of the redesign from start to finish, including: project scoping, requirements gathering, technology analysis, information architecture, user task flows, interaction flows, prototyping, and development. I also conducted user research using methods such as interviews, surveys, and frequent design reviews in order to address both user behavior and attitudes.Weekly design meetings were held with UX, UI developers, product management, testers, back-end developers, and back-end architects. High fidelity wireframes and storyboards where created to reach a consensus. I created high fidelity prototypes using AngularJS from wireframes to further demo functionality.Customers were found who used existing Traffic Policies GUI. We partnered with them to do iterative user testing on dynamic prototypes.

An existing policy system used multiple pages to create a series of interdependent rules, forcing the user to externalize substantial information when working with individual rules - influenced by those before it, and affecting those after.I built, led, and coordinated a multi-disciplinary team, including: project management, system architecture, control plane engineers, front-end development, and field engineers, through all facets of the redesign for this project, including: project scoping, requirements gathering, technology analysis, information architecture, user task flows, interaction flows, prototyping, and development.I was responsible for defining, organizing, and conducting all aspects of user research and design validation testing. Both internal SMEs and actual users participated in interviews, surveys, focus groups, and participatory design in order to address both user behavior and attitudes.The result was an inline editor that externalized memory by leaving surrounding rules visible as new rules where creates, or existing rules modified.

As a UX Designer & Developer for the Aviation Services Innovation Center I conducted independent research and analyzed user behavior to help create the future of proactive and efficient airline operations. In this laboratory we worked to better understand operational challenges, explored possibilities, innovated solutions, and demonstrated experiential operational benefits to improve our customer's bottom line.We started by building our understanding of the customer, identifying our customer's operation challenges, and observing how they run their operations through interviews and ethnographic research. Ways to help solve customer problems where explored and iterated, looking for opportunities to prescribe products and services as solutions to these problems. Once a solution was identified, the last step was to effectively communicate the value of that offering to the customer.Guiding a small team of developers through user workflows and wire-frames, we designed and developed a web-based interactive value proposition tool, using various interactive visualization to facilitate communication and enable real-time collaboration with the customer. These tools helped communicate the value of a solution, or suite of solutions, by helping to quantify that value.Extensive research and iteration was done into the fundamental elements that make up the overarching value proposition. The tool allowed these to be explored, demonstrating to the customer how the value proposition was derived. Free to change the underlying assumptions and measured heuristics on their own, the customer was able to draw correlations and recognize the integrity behind the value models presented; beyond simple marketing values. Our tools demonstrated the truth in the values and customers could convince themselves of it by interacting with the tool.

Multiple visualizations of schedule could be viewed at once or one at a time, with individual projects being selected to gain additional details.Project - "Mobile App Gallery": Mimicking the Apple App Store and Google Play store, the Mobile App Gallery provides a method for Boeing employees and customers to review available mobile apps and download them to their compatible mobile device. The site was designed using a responsive layout, allowing a single design to adapt to the device’s form factor (e.g., phone, tablet or desktop).Project - "Data Distribution": Supporting the Mobile App Gallery, the Data Distribution site is a desktop targeted online tool suite for uploading and maintaining all aspects of a Boeing branded mobile app. It uses a combination of in-house and commercial software interfaces to provide an app owner with the tools necessary to manage versions, authority and mobile data.
