Research Internship with Jonah Erlebacher and the Erlebacher Group. Natural gas is the most-extracted material on the planet, contributing to a large portion of greenhouse gas emissions. Each year, steam reforming of methane produces over 10 million metric tons of hydrogen, in addition to 70-100 million tons of carbon dioxide. Methane pyrolysis is an energy-efficient, environmentally friendly approach to producing emission-free hydrogen and carbon products— but in order to be commercially viable, these products must be useful for large-scale applications. The Erlebacher Group, via DOE-funded research, is investigating a novel method of methane pyrolysis that utilizes metal salt intermediates. The project focuses on scaling up the methane pyrolysis reactors in conjunction with ETCH INC, to achieve small-scale commercial production in the near future. In addition to large quantities of clean hydrogen, the ETCH process also yields large amounts of highly pure carbon. This project is processing and upgrading carbon to assess its potential fields of application. By tweaking reaction and processing conditions, the structure and morphology of the carbon can be tuned to yield carbon ranging from amorphous to highly graphitic, structured materials. The powder used to create these carbon-metal epoxy composites is taken from the Etch process before chemical purification resulting in a 14:1 carbon-metal powder. This opens up a large range of applications including composite and building materials.
