When I was growing up back in Nigeria, my family and friends referred to me as “Mr. Neat and Clean,” meaning that I was very organized and orderly with all things, especially in my room. Little did I know that my attitude prepared me for something meaningful in the future – Project Management. Even though I started my career as a mechanical engineer because I loved technical stuff and calculations, I found my perfect career path when I managed my first project. The project involves the installation of Dyson heat extractors on all floors in the Head Office of a major oil and gas corporation in Nigeria. By adopting all the project management domains, I delivered the project on time, within budget, with limited resources, and within scope. Apart from helping different clients to manage their projects using relevant project management methodologies (agile and waterfall), I enjoyed playing Scrabble game, bowling, reading, traveling and tourism, personal development, and listening to TEDx Talks. One of my favorite TEDx Talks was the one presented by Amy Hamilton titled “The Secret to Life from a PMP.” In her TEDx Talk, she describes how project management relates to our personal lives in these aspects: Definition of a Project, Scope of a Project, and Project Phases. My aha moment was when I discovered how I could impact various industries by putting project management into a broader perspective.Having visited, lived, studied, and worked in these countries (Nigeria, England, Northern Ireland, France, United Arab Emirates, United States of America, and Canada), I have learned to appreciate the value of diversity and cultural awareness in successful small to large projects. Most importantly, communicating in a language that each stakeholder understands better.
