WHEN I WAS YOUNGI had hoped to become one of two things: a veterinarian and an actress. Though these were two drastically different career paths, I loved the idea of becoming one or the other. However, I wasn’t good at math or science to be a vet, and becoming an actress took lots of work with minimal success. So for some time, I was unsure what I wanted to do.AROUND HIGH SCHOOLI took various art classes and I became interested in drawing and creating artwork with my two hands. Outside those classes, I would make my own characters based on my favorite shows and books and create original characters based on stories my best friend and I wrote. Later on, I decided to pursue something artistic, but I wanted it to lead to something more practical. So I chose to study graphic design without knowing a thing about it since it seemed practical.ENTERING COLLEGEI started my first year not having any design skills, so I felt very inadequate compared to my classmates. But I was able to pick up the basics quickly and got through my first set of projects. From there, I would continue to improve my design skills and gain more knowledge on what there is to know about being a graphic designer.EVERYDAYI worked tirelessly to ensure I gave 110% in every project I received and took the time to practice the skills I learned in class. All while supporting myself on the side by working at a grocery store. I’ve had my successes and my losses over the past few years. And, of course, I’ve had my doubts. Sometimes there were moments when I felt like what I was doing wasn’t enough and wondered if I was pursuing the right path in life. But I’m so thankful to have such a strong support group of friends, classmates, and professors around me to help and guide me through my journey as a person and a designer. Because of them, I can continue forward with my head held high and remember why I’m working so hard: to make little Ocean proud of who they’ll become.TODAYHi everyone, my name is Ocean Fernandez. I’m a gender-fluid graphic designer of color who loves anime, video games, cats, zines, books, music, food, and many other things. I like to see life as an adventure that lets you explore many different things and meet many amazing people. My design work focuses most on brand identity, editorial design, illustration, and expressive typography. On the side, I’m a hobbyist digital artist and character designer that creates both original and fanmade work. As I approach the next chapter in life, I’m excited to learn new things and see where my skills and interest will bring me.
