About Oded Marom
I am a postdoctoral fellow at the sociology department at the University of Southern California. My research focuses on how changes in people's daily lives, in the ways they organize, communicate, and relate to one another, shape their understanding of the political world and their place in it. Specifically, I'm interested in how such changes relate to people's tendencies toward political intolerance, partisanship, and radicalism. My previous work used the American libertarian movement as a case study to show how cultural variations in local civic groups lead to meaningful differences in their political outcomes. As I show in a series of articles, even though they share the same ideology in theory, libertarians have distinct understandings of the relationships within their civic groups, and this leads the members of each group to develop very different interaction patterns. These differences translate into significant variations in how American libertarians understand the goals of the libertarian movement, appreciate political tactics, and even relate to people of other political camps.In my current project, I examine how people's political discourse changes as they move between varying social contexts, with particular attention to the differences between offline and online discourse. This project explores the way different environments facilitate varying norms of interaction, enabling people to raise different kinds of arguments. A central part of this project involves articulating the causal relations between variations in the cultural environment and people's political behavior.

I am a PhD student of sociology at the University of Southern California. My research spans the fields of cultural sociology, political sociology, sociological theory, the sociology of morality, and social movement studies. I use various qualitative methods, including participant observations, focus group discussions, and ethnographic content analysis, to answer two overarching questions: how do the cultural environment and particular relationships in which people are embedded shape their interpretation of political ideas? And how does this affect the way they become engaged in politics? I am particularly interested in the way these factors facilitate political tolerance and intolerance in civic groups.
