I started my career as an ER Scribe with an eye towards medical school. Every shift I wondered: “Who is this working for?” Everywhere I looked, it seemed like everyone involved was having a miserable time, most of the time. From clunky EHR software to Kafkaesque processes for transfers that frustrated both patients and providers, healthcare delivery seemed like a torturous experience for everyone involved. I knew some of the systemic issues were policy-based because of my background in public policy and public health. Eventually, I learned about UX design and put it all together. The more I learned about design, the more I thought about how it could be used to transform not just the tools, spaces, and individual interactions, but the entire ecosystem of health maintenance and delivery. I believe design thinking, with its propensity for finding multiple interventions, bias towards action, and deep value of empathy and human-centered thinking is essential for dealing with the wicked problems we face in health care and public health more broadly.
