I'm Ofer. I am an associate professor at the Zuckerberg Institute for Water Research, Ben-Gurion University of the Negev, Israel. My main research interests are: • Vadose zone hydrology• Groundwater recharge• Land-use impact on water resources quality• Remediation of contaminated sites• Contaminant transport• Soil monitoring technologies Years of research on the impact of land use on groundwater quality, brought me to the conclusion that groundwater protection from pollution hazards has to initiate in the unsaturated zone, long before groundwater pollution becomes evident and irreversible. To achieve this goal I developed the Vadose zone Monitoring System (VMS). The patented VMS provides continuous information, on water flow and contaminant transport from land surface to the water table below. Via Sensoil, the company I founded, the VMS has been successfully implemented in a wide range of scientific and commercial research projects on 5 continents including: (a) water flow and contaminant transport in the unsaturated zone; (b) long-term impact of agriculture on groundwater quality;(c) floodwater infiltration and groundwater recharge; and (d) bioremediation of contaminated sitesI strongly believe that only a major shift in monitoring efforts from the saturated to the unsaturated zones can lead to reduction of water resources pollution.
