I love the role of educator and mentor! Fielding financial questions from fledgling entrepreneurs at 1871 has been extremely fulfilling, especially when I see the light bulb over their head shine bright, or watch their anxiety fade away. One of the benefits of being a small business owner is the ability to be quick and nimble; to pivot. This is my most impressive 2-pivot example.PIVOT #1Being a solopreneur bootstrapper, I didn't have access to operating capital to hire and scale, so I needed to think outside of the box; I merged with Apogee Strategies, a Chicago based IT firm. Great things happened during my time acting as one of four partners like having the time to document all of my financial management processes, and hiring a bookkeeper to follow those processes and provide services. I had time to rejuvenate, rebuild, rethink and reinvent. PIVOT #2My new partners decided their market was 100+ person offices, because that's a lot of PCs to manage! I, on the other hand, have a passion for entrepreneurs and their unrelenting spirit to do what it takes to build something from nothing. It was clear that this mismatch could not be fixed, and we unwound the merger. I got Officeheads back on January 1, 2013, with one employee, solid business processes, and a determination to grow. Three months later I had tripled my client base and doubled revenue for three years running.

At RNW, I had the great fortune of being an entrepreneur with someone else’s money.I was hired by three management consultants before they had office space and grew the business to over $3M. I developed all of the internal processes, hired and trained staff, and managed the finances. I implemented special projects to improve efficiency and made this company run like a top! Yes! This is where I cut my teeth on operating a healthy business!After 14-years I worked myself out of a job because operations was as tuned as it possibly could be. Good thing, too, because two weeks later, Officeheads was born!

I have always been a process person striving for efficiency.Within the first 5-months of employment I presented a plan to reorganize the roles of associate staff. The managing partner accepted my proposal and asked me to also implement the plan. I edited job descriptions, reassigned support relationships, and centralized document production and desk top publishing to ensure the most skilled creatives produced impressive reports with quick turnaround.I was not popular to say the least. Existing staff was not happy with the new kid making massive changes to how it was always done. Yet nothing worth having comes easy.
